My Comments on the WHO Director-General’s Report to Member States at the 76th World Health Assembly on May23. 2023

Dear the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, IPPNW

The report below was presented in front of all state representatives of the world covering many issues about global health crises and challenges the world has faced since the establishment of the World Health Organization. The report discussed many achievements and successes in promoting health along with other issues including: health emergency preparedness and response, the COVID-19 pandemic, the insufficient progress to reach the related targets of the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, the benefits of universal health coverage, the vital opportunity to refocus political attention and financial investments on accelerating progress, preventing disease and addressing its root causes, the Alliance on Transformative Action on Climate Change and Health (which supports 65 countries to build climate resilient and climate-friendly health systems), and many others.

Unfortunately, I was expecting the report to include something about the impacts of wars, the effect of conflicts and overspending on arms on people’s health, and the world health plans to achieve health for all anywhere and everywhere. I believe it was an opportunity to highlight the health and social consequences of excessive military spending, and to call for more efforts to promote health through diverting those resources to health programs.

Reflection on World Children’s Day 2022

“From Hiroshima to Fukushima, Child to Child Messages.”

Dear all,

Every year, World Children’s Day is celebrated on the 20th of November to commemorate the Declaration of the Rights of the Child by the UN General Assembly on November 20th, 1959. The objective of this international day is to promote togetherness and worldwide awareness to improve children’s welfare everywhere and anywhere. The theme of 2022 is to share a positive message of equality and inclusion for every child.

Sadly, the war in Ukraine is a tipping point for world security, welfare, and the international economy, especially since we are residents of a globalized world. Indeed, we are currently living in a fragile world as grave humanitarian crises and the impacts of land mines, cluster munitions, in addition to nuclear war threats grow without a light at the end of the tunnel. This brutal war and its consequences have jeopardized our hope and plan to build our ideal world – one with a healthy and peaceful future for all.

As we may remember, the United Nations proclaimed 2000 as the International Year of the Culture of Peace. Furthermore, the UN declared the years 2001-2010 as the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-violence for the Children of the World, which has special significance to us. To this end, many of us were involved in proposals and action plans to promote the education and involvement of the children of the world in the practice of a culture of peace under the slogan: Preparing Our Children for Peace. Like many of you, I had the opportunity to take part in a number of activities on peace and disarmament campaigns regionally and globally. Children were a priority in my plans and involvements.

In this respect, I remember one of the articles I published in public and educational magazines, under the title: “From Child to Child…Toward a World Free of Nuclear Weapons,” and its subtitle: “From Hiroshima to Fukushima, Child to Child Messages.” (An image of the article is attached). Child-to-Child (CtC) is a children-led approach to health promotion, community development, and world welfare and peace. CtC is based on the belief that children can be actively involved in their communities, in solving community problems, and in bridging gaps to understand each other as well as other communities.

Many of us were involved in activities and projects such as “Learning to Abolish War: Teaching Toward a Culture of Peace.” This project was designed as a peace educational tool that directly confronts the paramount task of bringing forth a culture of peace and the abolition of war.

Unfortunately, the war in Ukraine has challenged our plans to prepare our children and youth for peace and conduct peace education activities in various parts of the world. Indeed, this catastrophic war has forever changed life as we know it.

However, as campaigners and activists working together to build a culture of peace and non-violence for the children and youth of the world, we believe more than ever that peace education programs are vital. This belief is the only way we can look forward to a peaceful and healthy world in which our children and future generations live.

Between “Sustainable Peace for a Sustainable Future” (the slogan of “International Day of Peace” for 2012) and the slogan of “End racism. Build peace.” In 2022, we tragically find the world today far from peace. However, we must remain adamant about achieving our goals, which should motivate us more than ever to work harder together for a world of peace, a world free from violence and racial discrimination. A world where sympathy and empathy overcome suspicion and hate. A world we can really be proud of.

سلام مستدام من أجل مستقبل مستدام …… شعار “يوم السلام العالمي” للعام 2012

 

سلام مستدام من أجل مستقبل مستدام  هو شعار “يوم السلام العالمي” للعام 2012، هذا اليوم العالمي الذي أعتمدته الجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة في الحادي والعشرين من أيلول/ سبتمبر من كل عام لتؤكد، أن السلام أكبر وأشمل من انتهاء حرب أو معركة، أو نزاع هنا وهناك، وأن الحاجة متزايدة إلى بذل المزيد من الجهود من أجل تحقيق السلام في كل أنحاء العالم

إن السلام المستدام يحتاج أولاً إلى تنمية مستدامة تلبي حاجات الإنسان الأساسية في مكافحة ثالوث الجهل والفقر والمرض الذي يفتك بالمجتمع الإنساني في أكثر من مكان، ولاشك أن حجر الزاوية في مواجهة هذه التحديات لا يكون إلا في تحقيق الأهداف الإنمائية للألفية المتمثلة بتعزيز التعليم الأساسي والرعاية الصحية الأولية ومكافحة الفقر

في هذا اليوم، ينظم المجتمع المدني في عواصم العالم الكبرى، حملته العالمية بالدعوة إلى نشر ثقافة السلام، والعدل، والمساواة، واحترام مباديء وقرارات الأمم المتحدة، ويسلط الضوء أيضاً على نزع السلاح والحد من الإنفاق العسكري، هذا الإنفاق الذي يتزايد يوماً بعد يوم على حساب حاجات المجتمع الإنساني الأساسية إلى التنمية المستدامة، والتي تقتطع من قدرات بلدان العالم الثالث على تلبية هذه الحاجات علماً أن الإنفاق العالمي هذا العام قد اقترب من ألفي مليار دولار، مرتفعاً بشكل خاص في بعض الدول الآسيوية، بالإضافة إلى منطقة الشرق الأوسط وأفريقيا

كثيراً ما يشوب هذا الإنفاق فوضى الأولويات، وألاعيب السياسة، والصفقات المشبوهة التي تكدس المليارات في جيوب حفنة من شركات السلاح لا يعرف تاريخها غير الإثراء مهما كان الثمن الإنساني الباهظ الذي تدفعه الشعوب من قوت أطفالها ومستقبلهم 

لا بد في هذه المناسبة أن أكرر أنه في الوقت الذي تدوي فيه وسائل الإعلام الغربية وهي تتحدث عن دروس ورسائل هذا اليوم إلى العالم، ويرتفع فيه صوت المجتمع المدني الغربي، رافضاً ومحتجاً هنا وهناك في عواصم صناعة السلاح وساحات إمبراطوريات تجارها، وشركاتها، يكاد يغيب هذا اليوم عن ساحات ضحاياها في بلدان العالم النامية، بينما تكتفي وسائل الإعلام فيه، في أفضل الأحوال، بنقل خبر من هنا، وخبر من هناك

إن الشعار الذي صمم لاستخدامه رمزاً ليوم السلام العالمي هو للبريطاني هولتوم الذي استلهمه من تطلع الإنسان إلى عالم خال من الأسلحة النووية، وصنعه من مخلفات سلاح نووي جرى إبطاله والتخلص منه، يؤكد هذا تطلع كل محبي السلام والمستقبل المستدام إلى التخلص من الأسلحة النووية في كل مكان، لأنها وبكل بساطة تهدد، وفي كل لحظة، البنية التحتية للحياة على وجه الأرض، فقد تنفجر بسبب حرب، أو خطأ فردي، أو كارثة طبيعية كالزلازل والأعاصير والفيضانات، التي يمكن أن تحدث هنا وهناك، في الأرض أو البحر، بل يمكننا القول أن هذه الأسلحة النووية قد منحت الإنسان، ولأول مرة، القدرة على تدمير نفسه بنفسه، وخلال ساعات معدودة.

نعم.. استخدمت المنظمات الإنسانية والحقوقية، لاسيما الحملة العالمية للقضاء على الأسلحة النووية (آيكان) هذه الحقائق المتعلقة بالآثار الإنسانية الكارثية والمأساوية لاستخدام الأسلحة النووية في “هيروشيما” و”ناجازاكي” في الدعوة للتوصل إلى اتفاقية دولية تحظرها وتعمل على التخلص منها، مؤكّدة أن بقاء هذه الأسلحة أشد خطراً من أي كارثة أخرى، كما أن الاستنزاف الهائل للموارد الاقتصادية والذي يزيد عن 105 مليار دولار تنفق سنوياً على صيانتها وتحديثها، يمكن توجيهها لتحقق الكثير للإنسان والمجتمع العالمي في مواجهة الفقر والجهل والمرض، وفي بناء بيئة مستدامة تنعم بها البشرية، وتقود العالم إلى سلام مستدام ومستقبل مستدام

وهكذا أثمرت هذه الرسائل الإنسانية في تعزيز موقف الرأي العام تجاه هذه القضية من أجل حث حكومات العالم على التوصل إلى الاتفاقية المنشودة التي استجابت لها أكثر من 146 دولة. نعم إنها رسائل الضمير الإنساني، وتطلعات تستحق أن نبذل لتحقيقها كل ما نستطيع، فالإنجازات العظيمة تبدأ دائماً بخطوات صغيرة

لا يسعنا في هذا اليوم، “يوم السلام العالمي” إلا أن نطالب منظمات المجتمع المدني في جميع أنحاء العالم، ووسائل الإعلام، والحكومات أن تعمل معاً على دعم جهود حظر هذه الأسلحة عالميا لأنها الخطر الحقيقي الذي يهددنا جميعاً، وتأييد إطلاق مفاوضات دولية لإنجاز اتفاقية شاملة تحظر تصنيع وحيازة واستخدام الأسلحة النووية، وتضمن التحقق والالتزام الكامل قانونيا بتفكيك وإنهاء الأسلحة النووية من قبل جميع دول العالم، لأن التخلص منها هو الأمن الحقيقي للبشرية جمعاء، وهو الطريق من أجل سلام مستدام ومستقبل مستدام
